FAQ

Roofing

What kind of styles do you offer?

Eagle Siding, Inc. offers a wide variety of colors and styles to choose from.

What type of warranty do you offer on your Roofing?

Depending on the type of shingles you purchase, Eagle Siding, Inc may offer a Lifetime Limited Transferable Warranty.

How can I get samples of your products?

Our sales representatives can come out to your home and help you determine what style of roofing would be best for your home. They can provide samples of our products.

What do I need to do to prepare for the installation of my new roof?

Remove all loose items from walls and shelves. The constant hammering may cause enough vibration to shake these items down. Make sure to clear your driveway and items directly surrounding your home. Also, please see that electrical power is provided to the outside of your home. If exterior plugs are not available, please run an extension cord through a window or door.

How will new shingles look on my roof?

Choosing Eagle Siding, Inc. is one of the best ways to improve the visual appeal and market value of your home. Their rich, dimensional appearance makes a statement that few other roofing materials can.

What is the best roof?

Wouldn’t it be simple if there was one answer to all roofing problems? Unfortunately there is no magic pill in the roofing market that solves all roofing problems. What the market does offer is a wide selection of good products, each having attributes and faults. The key to selecting the proper roof system is identifying the specific roof design parameters of your building, and how each roof system meets those parameters. A simple example would be: If a building has very heavy foot and wheel traffic on the roof, a 45 mil single ply membrane probably would not be advisable, due to its limited puncture resistance.

Why does my roof leak?

Well a cynic might answer that there are two kinds of roofs, those that leak and those that will leak. Roofs leak from a break in the waterproofing layer, sometimes caused by mechanical damage (ie, someone dropping an HVAC access panel on the roof), sometimes from an opening in the sealant, such as pitch pans and caulking, and sometimes from deterioration or defects in the roofing material. The key roof management task is leak avoidance. Find and correct defects before they leak.

How long should a roof last?

Like any building component, roofs degrade at different rates depending on a large number of factors: the quality of original construction, the level of abuse, the level of maintenance, appropriateness of design, etc. So how long should a roof last? We have seen poorly designed and installed roofs go as few as six or seven years before they failed, and we have seen old coal tar built up roofs that were over 60 years old. Most building owners, roofing contractors and designers feel 20 years is an acceptable service life.

Can I cover over my existing roof?

Installing a roof over the top of an existing roof is generally acceptable under these guidelines:
1) A building cannot have more than two roofs;
2) No wet insulation can be left in place;
3) The roof structure must be able to handle the additional roof load;
4) The new roof must be attached to the roof deck to meet wind loads (it is not generally acceptable to adhere the new roof to the old roof).

Siding

How long is Eagle Siding Inc. siding warranted for?

Because we carry multiple products, please ask your sales representative over the phone or when at your home for your estimate. Most of our vinyl siding vendors have a limited lifetime warranty and is transferable once.

Do I ever have to paint my siding again?

No. Our siding is virtually maintenance free. The most you ever have to do is give your home a washing with soap and water once or twice a year.

Does it come with matching trim?

We offer the widest variety of trim pieces in the industry. Everything from function utility trims to substantial wide trims resembling dimensional lumber, fluted cornerposts and decorative crown molding for window headers.

Does your siding have seams?

Our siding is generally available in 6′ to 12′ lengths, so it needs to be overlapped at the ends to cover an entire wall. Hansons siding is designed to provide a virtually seamless appearance. A good siding installer will lap you siding away from traffic to further minimize the laps.

How much does it cost to side a home?

Because we offer siding at a number of price points to fit any need and any budget, and because every home and siding job is unique, there is no way to answer this question. The best thing to do is invite a sales representative into your home so he can measure it accurately and discuss other needs you may have.

Is there a brand of paint that matches Hansons available siding colors?

With today’s paint technology, the best way to match paint is to take a sample or chip of your siding to your local paint store. Most stores have electronic color matching capabilities.

Are there other materials that are better than vinyl?

Not when it comes to siding. Vinyl siding’s outstanding features and benefits have made it the most popular siding material in America today. Because vinyl is the preferred siding for more and more homeowners, it retains most of its installed cost.

My home is partially brick and partially wood siding. Can I still use vinyl siding?

Yes. Vinyl siding is extremely versatile and can be used with just about any exterior building material-brick, cinder block, even natural logs and field stones.

Is one season better than another to have my new siding installed?

Not really. You can have your vinyl siding installed in any season, as your schedule and budget allow. Regardless of when you have your new siding installed, you’ll enjoy the immediate benefits of improved appearance, as well as the long-term benefits of durability and easy maintenance.

Steel Roofing

How long has Stone-Coated Steel roofing been around?

Stone-coated steel roofing occurred during World War II when tar and sand were used to cover galvanized steel bunkers. After the war, the practice was commercialized and the first roofs were produced. Stone coated steel roofs have been protecting buildings for close to 50 years, but the product technology today bears little resemblance to early practices due to advances in the chemistry of coatings.

Will a Steel roof make my home hot?

No. A properly vented steel roof system moves air both between the shingles and the underlying deck as well as moving air from vents under the decking. Heated air is allowed to dissipate through the ridgeline as cooler air is drawn through eave vents. Reduced energy bills can result from airflow both under and over the decking.

Can you walk on a steel roof?

Yes. Some care must be exercised while walking on the roof, but note that roofers walk all over the shingles during the installation process.

Is a steel roof noisy in the rain?

The Metro roofing system is quiet. The combination of dead air space and the stone coating minimize outside sounds. One rural couple standing directly under a stone coated steel roof observed that they could hear the rain striking a metal building about 50 feet from where they were standing, but couldnt hear any noise from the stone/steel roof directly over their heads.

How wind resistant is a steel roof?

The Metro roofing system has been proven to resist wind speeds in excess of 120-mph. One homeowners roof survived tornado force winds completely intact. “We lost 12 large treesthe shingled roof of our garagea 14 X 14 (2″ X 6″) pump house deck slammed into the house and buckled the brick. You said it would hold up in a tornado. Im writing to tell you it will.” Bill Jamieson

How do the granules stay bonded to the steel?

Specially graded, non-oiled stone chips, produced by ISP Corporation, are used for all Metro stone-coated products. The finely graded, non-oiled stone granules ensure long-term adhesion to the steel substrate and are embedded in a UV resistant acrylic polymer for a lasting bond to the steel substrate.

Will a steel roof rust?

The steel substrate is protected from corrosion by layers of metallic and polymer coatings. Metro utilizes an advanced metal composite developed by BIEC International and introduced in 1973 as aluminum-zinc coated steel. The composite improved earlier metallic coatings by applying an aluminum-zinc alloy to the steel in a continuous hot dip process. The aluminum creates an inert barrier coat while enhancing the long-term performance of zinc and its ability to protect breaks in the coating.

Galvalume coated steel has repeatedly been shown in industry studies, conducted over the last 20 years, to outperform the corrosion resistance of other coated metals. This is why the Metro roof system is referred to as “The final Roofing System”, and is backed up with a 50 year limited warranty.

Does the color fade?

Though sized more precisely, Metro uses the same stone granules used by asphalt shingle manufacturers for over 50 years, so history demonstrates that fading is not a problem. Over time, a slight change in color may occur due to settling of airborne contaminants, however periodic rain or washing the roof with a garden hose will keep the roof looking new.

Is a steel roof fire safe?

Steel roofing is classified as a noncombustible roofing material (Class A). In new construction and in many re-roofing applications the metal roofing system is a Class A noncombustible roof assembly. In roof-over applications, where Metro panels are installed over old combustible shakes or shingles, the resulting roof assembly can be classified as A, B, or C depending upon the type of underlayment installed between the old and new roof.

There are many examples of the safe fire performance of stone-coated steel roofs in areas subjected to fire storms. Additionally, the lightweight strength of the steel roofing system precludes it from crashing down on occupants exposed to fire within their residence.

How long does it take to install a steel roof?

Usually only a few days. The complexity of the buildings roofscape is the primary factor in determining the time required. Complex roofs require more time than basic designs.

What is the installed weight of a steel roof in comparison to other products?

PRODUCT WGT. PER SQ. (1-Sq. = 100 Sq.ft)
Steel Roofing 125 lbs.
Standard (3-Tab) Asphalt Shingles 190 215 lbs.
Wood Shake/Shingle* 250 300 lbs.*
Heavy Weight Laminated Asphalt Shingles 290 430 lbs.
Clay / Concrete Tiles* 900 1200 lbs.*

*Note that the weights for cedar, clay and concrete products are all dry weights. All three-product categories weights increase when wet.

What does hail do to steel roofs?

Metro panels received the highest impact resistance rating from Underwriters Laboratories. Except under the most extreme storms, Metro panels show no visible effects from impacting hail stones. Some insurance carriers extend a discount on premiums to homeowners that have a Metro roof.

Are steel roofs more susceptible to lightning strikes?

Steel roofing is no more susceptible to lightning than other roofing materials. It has been demonstrated that lightning strikes most frequently the highest points of terrain. Where concerns exist, lightning rods can be installed on roofs that are the highest point of surrounding terrain.

Warranty

Why Are Warranties Important?

A new roof is a big investment, typically involving thousands of your hard-earned dollars and lasting 25, 30, 40 years, or more. As with any big investment, knowing in advance what your warranty covers could save you thousands in the event that problems arise with your roof.

What Are The Chances Of Having A Problem With My New Eagle Siding, Inc. Roof?

Based on our state-of-the-art manufacturing process, the odds of having a problem with a new Eagle Siding, Inc. roof are miniscule. On the other hand, while serious problems with Eagle Siding, Inc. roofing materials are rare, if you were to have a problem, it can be as expensive to fix as your roof originally cost. So while the risk of having a problem is low, the cost if you do have a serious problem can be high.

What Should I Look For In A Roofing Warranty?

Basically, there are two types of coverage that you should ask your contractor about: coverage against manufacturing defects in the materials and coverage against workmanship errors.

Tell Me About Coverage Against Manufacturing Defects...

As far as we know, all manufacturers provide a warranty against manufacturing defects for their roofing products, although your exact coverage will vary depending on the brand. For example, a typical shingle warranty will cover manufacturing defects for a period of 20, 30, 40 years, or more. The warranty on the other components that make up your roofing system can vary from as little as a few months to several years. It is important to remember that coverage against manufacturing defects is provided by the manufacturer, so you should select a brand from a manufacturer who is financially strong and therefore more likely to be in business for as long as you own your roof which could be several decades!

What is the Eagle Siding, Inc. Smart Choice® Protection Period?

Eagle Siding, Inc. warranties come with a special provision called the Smart Choice® Protection Period that covers you against manufacturing defects during the critical early years of your new roof. During this period, in the event that you experience a manufacturing defect on covered components, Eagle Siding, Inc. will provide you with 100% replacement materials and the reasonable cost of labor to install them. This is important because some roofing warranties may only provide replacement materials, but not the labor to install them.

What Is The GAF Weather Stopper® System Plus Ltd. Warranty?

The GAF Weather Stopper® System Plus Ltd. Warranty provides coverage against manufacturing defects for all major GAF components on your roof (not just your shingles) so youll have the peace of mind of knowing that, if any covered roofing component fails, it will be covered by the warranty (see ltd. warranty for complete coverage and restrictions). The warranty is available through Eagle Siding, Inc., and is a low-cost way to get up to 50 years of non-prorated coverage (against manufacturing defects) on your new roofing system. For the small additional cost of the System Plus ltd. warranty, this is probably the best value you can get for your investment.

How Do I File A Claim If I Have A Manufacturing Defect On My GAF Shingles?

Before you proceed, if possible you should locate a copy of your GAF warranty and a copy of the Eagle Siding, Inc., contract, or original estimate. You will also need to provide the date applied, proof that you were the owner when the shingles were installed (or that the warranty was properly transferred to you), and the number of squares applied (1 square = 100 square feet). Then call our Warranty Service Department toll-free at 1-800-458-1860, and let us know the nature of your complaint.
